After years of knocking on the door in both this league and the tennistour.org league, Rahber wins his first championship in a tight match over defending champ Varun with score of 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7)! Thanks Will for providing me with real time texting, including at 6-6 in the final tiebreak! Neither player won their divisions, but were consistently the best players for entire year, both finishing the season with only one loss each. Both players have finished in at least the top 4 for the past 3 years. Quotes from the players below:
Rahber stated, “Super fun and nerve wracking match against Varun. In the first set, Varun was on fire with his forehand – I had a real hard time even getting into points as anything above the height of the net to his forehand was put away by Varun smoothly – he takes the ball early and has a flat shot so even if I got to the ball – I couldn’t hit it cleanly. He banged a number of winners past me from behind the baseline – only guy on tour who consistently can do it.
2nd set was a dogfight. I started attacking more with my forehand and jumped to an early lead 4-1 I think. But a few missed shots and Varun came all the way back to 4 all. Points became much longer and fortunately I was serving some big shots so that kept me in the game.
Tiebreaker was super nervy – I got up 4-1 and again Varun fought back to 6-6 – we were both feeling the nerves. Varun missed a critical return just wide at 6-6 off a slow 2nd serve from me and 7-6 was a long point with slicing and dicing and moving each other around and finally Varun dumped one into the net. I finished it off with a fast 1st serve that went long.
Great match – good degree of playing and good fun – lots of swearing on both our sides. A real pleasure to play Varun!
Varun says, ” Good match. Rahber was too solid and more consistent. I had my moments but Rahber was the more deserving player – better all round game. Congratulations to him! ”
